The title word 'Gulu' can be translated as 'sleep' or 'I sleep'.

Review: Neil March Feb 2023

"The latest EP by Montague Armstrong (or Montagju Armstrons as it in Latvian) is entitled Gulu. It finds the duo exploring their heritage through the fascinating lens of their roots in Eastern Europe and North Africa plus some Roma/Traveller connections. Having recently had the pleasure of the duo playing a stunning live set for Vanishing Point late last year, it is great to hear this new material.

Es Gulu Gulu opens proceedings and immediately this is a departure from their usual vintage organ-led incidental pop. Jude’s voice, harmonised in open fifths plays off against single guitar chords, singing in another language, the voice sounding like it may be recorded in reverse, with an Eastern feel to the melody. It is a striking and unexpected start. Nejajati Belenini has a bouncy triplet time rhythm with claps, organ tones here and there but a sparse feel and more enigmatic vocals but perhaps offering a slightly more African vibe that reminds me a little of Nwando Ebizie or something Esperanza Spalding might do.

Baljaitina juru peldi has an enigmatic feel with spacy sounds that are slightly piercing and more vocals in a language I cannot identify. At times Jude and Matt sing in a kind of bendy unison. Then the track picks up with vibrato organ chords playing against strong percussion before deconstructing down to the spacy sounds again. Tumsa gaju vakara has single percussive hits that are vaguely pitched while rich deep synth chords come and go, accompanying Jude’s major key vocals. There is an almost meditative feel to this track and the melody stays around the same 4 or 5 pitches around the lower half of the scale in relation to the deep drone that continues to appear and disappear while the glassy percussion remains absolutely consistent.

It rounds off a work that is way more experimental than any I have heard by Montague Armstrong before but it really works and makes for compelling listening."
